George Jenkins High School is sponsor of countless gifted athletes. We lead the charge on the field, on the track, in the diamond, on the greens, in the water, and in far more areas. Evelyn Gardner is one of these incredible champions and as part of the GJ Varsity Swim Team, she puts her abilities to the test each day.

Evelyn has been a part of the swim team for two seasons now. Both seasons have been a substantial opportunity for growth and increased leadership skills across the board for her.

When asked about her favorite aspect of being part of the team, she responded, “Seeing my teammates improve.”

It is undoubtedly an honor not only to witness, but to be privy to the learning process of a teammate.

Despite her unshakable charisma, Evelyn does not “fit the norm” while swimming. She has a unique mindset, one of unwavering positivity, which sets her apart from the competitive nature of swim.

During our interview, she offered words of encouragement for fellow athletes, “Keep a positive mindset. You’re not going to be great at everything you do. You always start somewhere, progress takes time.”

Evelyn recounts the benefits of swimming as being mentally relaxing and very calming. She further voices that it is a terrific opportunity to get into shape physically, emphasizing that it is an excellent activity for building muscle. When asked if she would recommend swim to her peers, she answered an emphatic, “Yes!”

Evelyn truly shines while representing our school and she undeniably demonstrates the best of GJ to spectators all around. Thank you for making us proud, Evelyn!

Bartow Museum Greets Holiday Season with its “Festival of Wreaths”

Written by Lucia Winkler The Polk County History Center in Bartow, Florida has been ornamented in stylish reds, greens, and golds. Garlands wind through the rotunda's handrail, topped by bows that wonderfully complement the festive scene. The warm, wintery atmosphere is enlivened by the original plan for the building. Though the snowflake-shaped tiles and "swags", which are painted designs that adorn the museum year-round and resemble draping garlands, were not intended to carry a holiday mood,

Cheerleading is often seen in a shallow light, some seeing it solely as the uniform while others see false glamour in it; but behind the s
